Still present in our minds are the tragedies that took place at Columbine, Virginia Tech and most recently Sandy Hook Elementary as a result of gun violence. Thankfully, because of a bookkeeper dedicated to protecting innocent lives, we do not have to add Ronald E. McNair Discovery Learning Academy to that list.
With the assistance of a 911 dispatcher, Antoinette Tuff was able to convince Michael Brandon Hill,20 (a gunman armed with an AK-47 and 500 rounds of ammunition) to surrender to the police. It is because of her bravery that nobody was injured. By reflecting on her own personal issues, convincing the gunman that she loved and cared for him and ensuring him that this was not his only option, Antoinette was able to get him to reconsider his actions. Throughout it all, she has remained humble stating in an interview with Diane Sawyer “… I give it all to God, I’m not the hero. I was terrified.”
Although it is wonderful that this potential tragedy did not occur, there are countless tragedies occurring everyday across the United States all as a result of gun violence. Many of these tragedies will not receive national coverage. But we do not have to feel helpless.
