Oxford-English-Dictionary-001

twerk (v): a dance to popular music in a sexually provocative manner involving thrusting hip movements and a low, squatting stance

selfie (n): a photograph taken of oneself using a phone

Today, Wednesday August 28th, 2013, should be marked as a historic day in pop culture. Oxford English Dictionary has announced that they have added definitions for ‘twerk’ and ‘selfie’ to it’s set of thousands of English words. Oxford is one of the world’s largest dictionary and dates back about 150 years. The dictionary claims the term ‘twerk’ has been around for almost 20 years and has generated enough buzz to be added especially after Sunday’s MTV Music Video Awards.

“The current public reaction to twerking is reminiscent in some ways of how the twisting craze was regarded in the early 1960s, when it was first popularized by Chubby Checker’s song, ‘The Twist’,” – Spokesperson Katherine Connor Martin, Spokeswoman for Oxford English Dictionary

Let’s give a round of applause to Miley Cyrus and Instagram!
