The Experience

-2Walking into Laughing Man Tavern, you’re almost immediately greeted with four separate draft beer towers each holding four select drafts. A promising sight for beer drinkers as the happy hour boasts a wide selection for it’s $4.50 drafts. We arrived toward the beginning of their five hour long happy hour so the crowd was minimum and seemed perfect for those who enjoy random happy hours void of the hustle and bustle of other popular spots. This had to mean service would be prompt and there would be no interruptions or delays between drinks. Although not immediately greeted with a smile, the two bartenders on staff were eventually eager to get the drinks started and suggested a few of their select martinis to try. After selecting a surprisingly sweet but potent cocktail, the next obvious choice was to decide what food item to try. Although the appetizer options were impressively priced for the happy hour, a burger was opted instead. As time went on, a few more patrons joined the happy hour but it never got remotely busy or full. After another cocktail, the decorum of the restaurant/bar was observed. Sporting several bookcases and university paraphernalia, it was obvious the theme was a college kick back (interesting choice since Laughing Man’s location is in downtown DC. seemingly no where near any of the the area’s schools). Our service also began to lag, despite the bar being pretty empty. The saving grace of the happy hour (aside from the delicious burger) became the conversation with other patrons as we awaited more drinks or even our check to leave. The crowd (mostly young professionals) were all very friendly and eager to wipe away the woes of their current workdays. Laughing Man Tavern offers a pretty decent happy hour with great prices, decent service, and a calm atmosphere before the sporting event crowd comes. Although not incredibly memorable, it serves as a nice stop if you happen to be in the Metro Center/Downtown area and need a quick drink or two.
