Twitter was on fire and so were tons of brackets when #2 Georgetown was defeated by #15 FGCU. Who is FGCU you may ask. FGCU stands for Florida Gulf Coast University and is located in Fort Myers, Florida. The accredited public research university was established in 1991 by former Governor, Lawton Chiles, and commenced classes in August 1997. Currently, the university enrolls approximately 12,000 students. FGCU is a part of a 12-campus State University System of Florida. The Eagles completed their 4-year transition into NCAA Division 1 athletics for all athletic programs in 2011. FGCU is a part of the Atlantic Sun conference. FGCU only entails 9 athletic programs thus far. Their men’s basketball program is now their greatest asset. They shocked sports fans earlier in the year by defeating a strong University of Miami team. The Eagles received their first NCAA Championship invitation by defeating Belmont University for the Atlantic Sun Championship in what was only their 2nd year of eligibility. Last night, their win over highly favored Georgetown was their first win in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championships, which will go down in school history. In addition to school history, the Eagles will go down into NCAA history as well, by being only the seventh #15 seed to knock off a #2 seed. They are looking to be this year’s Cinderella story in addition to putting FGCU on the map. The highly energetic team is coached by Andy Enfield and is led by senior Sherwood Brown, pictured above. Catch them in action against San Diego State University tomorrow @ 7pm on TBS.
